RE: Fuel Economy

This sounds a little hard to believe? No, it sounds a LOT hard to believe. It’s basic science, it takes ‘X’ amount of horsepower to move a given load, and it takes ‘Y’ amount of energy (gasoline in this case) to make that ‘X’ amount of horsepower. To achieve a savings of that magnitude something needs to change, a lot.

RE: F550 thoughts?

Does it require an air brakes endorsement to drive? The chassis numbers for GVWR and GCWR will tell the tale on that. LOL. It’s a pickup truck chassis, they have never made one with air brakes, and there is only one F550 chassis so there is only one GVWR and GCWR number, no options. We have several of those chassis (albeit with flatbeds or dry van bodies) and with a cheap plug in tuner they are a very spirited drivetrain, even with a pretty big load on. Even empty they have a very civilized ride. The older one a have here as a farm truck has a *far* nicer ride than my cousins Dodge 350 does.

RE: I'm curious to know what you would do?

.... 9 months newer and 1/2 the mileage for $4000 difference .... or, for $14,500 (CAD) difference I can pick up a new 2023 high output Platinum that I ordered months ago that has finally come in. Have you considered what’s behind door number 3 also? Assign the sale of your preordered ‘23 for current market price and end up with the ‘22 for free, possibly with cash in hand to boot. I have considered the possibility of a door number 3. It would be similar to what you're suggesting but would likely look more like take delivery of the '23 now and if I'm not happy with it after running it for 6 months or so I could sell it and buy a '22. Yup, same, but different. LOL.

RE: Side by side towing

TThe Freedom Hauler is not considered a trailer as it is a solid attachment to trailer thus sway is not an issue. Show me that it's "not a trailer"... coming from the officials policing it...not the salesman (same goes for swivel wheel trailers). While I didn’t look up the law for “no particular place” I do know that traffic laws are pretty uniform when it comes to definitions of, and classes of vehicles. A “trailer”, in every definition I’ve seen in the many laws I have looked at is always “a vehicle drawn upon a highway by a motor vehicle” and then goes on to exempt things like farm implements and other motor vehicles, and specifically, motorcycle side-cars which when rigidly affixed (not hitch) to a bike become part of it, not ‘towed’ by it.

RE: RV built with hole in the Floor (Thor/Four Winds/Mandalay)

On a guess they drilled the hole for the steering in the wrong place. I’d think that’s unlikely, they’d have a template or something so that every unit built is the same. I suspect it’s either one of several used to carry the walls & floor to meet the chassis, or to give access to some component needed during assembly. Still surprising that they’d use an uninsulated steel plate to cover it.

RE: Side by side towing

Check out swivelwheel Those things are a maximum of 5’ X 8’ and 1,200 pounds, I think you’d be hard pressed to find a SxS that small.

RE: Dreaded White Smoke From Power Stroke

I have several 6.0 with auto rigs, all pickups or vans though, but the same issues. There is a test port with a threaded plug that can be removed and a temperature sender inserted. In ours it connects to a pillar-mounted temperature gauge. It’s saved our bacon a few times. In the few units that really work there is also an addition cooler. It’s all pretty cheap protection.

RE: Side by side towing

I would like to build a bracket on the back of a regular travel trailer that my front wheels would sit in. Then use a dolly or build free wheeling hubs that would attach to the back hubs of the side by side and put a set of small highway tires on it and transport. On the highway it *might* work, but it would fall off the first time you turned a corner, like getting onto the highway. The bracket on the back of the TT would have to pivot the same amount as the rear dolly or the increase / decrease in spacing front to back would toss it out of the wheel cups. It would also mean you’d be illegal in about half the States if you travel very far.

RE: An EV motor home/van?

I think that we, on this side of the Atlantic Ocean, often forget that there’s another ~750 million people on the other side. On that side 250 miles (400 km’s) a day is no issue considering that for most non-expressway travel you’d be very lucky to average 50 km/h. I think an 8 hours of travelling day would satisfy most folks over there.

RE: chassis battery charge ?

If your house & chassis batteries live in the same place just take the cheapest set of booster cables you can lay your hands on and connect the house & chassis batteries for 24 hours every couple of weeks. Great? No, but far better than nothing.

RE: Sensitive headlight sensor

I don’t know if Chevy is the same but with some brands the light level and delay after hitting that threshold is adjustable within the vehicle’s software. One option I like on mine that the dealer activated is that when the wipers are activated (other than just washing bug guts away) the full headlight package also comes on.

RE: How many EVs is GM actually selling?

I think believing EV's are not viable it because of the lack of charging stations is silly. At some point there were cars and no gas stations. The wright bros. didn't give up on the airplane because there were no airports. The infrastructure will come in time. To think there should be a charging station on every corner at this juncture is foolish. "The infrastructure will come in time" . . . Exactly. And until you can tell us precisely when that will happen, the go-to solution, as I see it, is a hybrid. Best of both worlds without the anxiety. Can you tell us precisely when the infrastructure for gasoline became adequate? I sincerely doubt it. However there is a prediction available: "By late 2024, Tesla would open 3,500 new and existing Superchargers along highway corridors to non-Tesla customers, the Biden administration said. It would also offer 4,000 slower chargers at locations like hotels and restaurants." Supercharger stations average about 10 chargers each. So about 350 next stations by the end of next year. Personally, I expect that Tesla will surpass that. They had better since vast majority of new EVs will be using the Tesla plug by 2015. Will that be adequate? For many people, yes. Could be improved in following years? Absolutely. Will it be adequate for you? That depends on your definition of adequate and where you drive. "Can you tell us precisely when the infrastructure for gasoline became adequate? I sincerely doubt it." Is this a history test or a discussion on EV's and our inadequate infrastructure? There’s a *HUGE* difference between the automobile becoming ubiquitous 120’ish years ago and EV’s catching on. People weren’t depending on their Model A’s & T’s to get to work, school, grocery shopping, etc, or travelling the country, and not just because there were no highways yet.

RE: How many EVs is GM actually selling?

Generally speaking, the further you go north the higher the adaption rate of EV’s is. Norway has the highest EV adoption rate in the world, now north of 90 percent. Iceland, holland, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany all have high EV adoption rates. I have family in Finland, the main reason, by a wide margin, for EV ownership is purely financial. People that formerly couldn’t really afford a car, now can, and thank the taxman for that. Gasoline is ~US$7.50 / gallon, and is garbage fuel from Russia that requires a major detune of most vehicles. Folks with money and performance cars buy gasoline imported from Germany with a 50% premium tacked on. Heavy import duties, huge annual taxes and licensing fees all disappeared with the EV’s In my family’s case the advantage is so great they have 3 EV’s now for less money than one gasser used to cost.

RE: Winter travel

Blow the water lines clear and pour a little antifreeze in the drain traps. No problem, I do it probably 6 or 7 times a winter between my 2 m/h’s. Just be sure to read up on how to *properly* blow the lines clear. No sanitizing required because you’re not filling the lines with goop, once you get the hang of it, winter ing takes 10 minutes, and getting ready for use takes less than 5 minutes. Hook up water and open taps.

RE: Disable alternator charging of house battery

This would be a *very* simple change if you only want it to be manual. Simply put an old school ‘constant duty’ relay, common & cheap as dirt, inline between alternator and house batteries. On older C’s it was mounted on the drivers side inner fender. These were commonly called a ‘Ford starter relay. In your case the trigger circuit would not be connected to an ignition switched hot wire, it would be connected to a mechanical switch on the dashboard instead.

RE: Walmart overnight parking

Quite a number of Walmarts have posted No Overnight parking. Some will allow with permission regardless. Some told me the police will likely knock on my door during the night because of local ordinance. I am on private property so whats up with that? Local Walmart policy I think. It’s not Wally Worlds doing, it’s the local governments doing. I can tell you from experience, the likelyhood of ‘the knock’ is directly related to the appearance and how long it’s there. In fact I’ve stopped for the night in many rest areas that were clearly posted and had security or police direct me to where I should park for the night. Like many other laws, it’s just one more tool for law enforcement, and it’s not universally applied.

RE: mixing batteriy sizes

Another option for you to consider is to create two ‘banks’ of battery power by running the newer battery by itself and the other 2 (together) as a second battery. This can be done via a cheap marine battery switch (bat. 1, bat. 2, both, off) or by just swapping cables. With one, or two, battery switches you can combine or isolate batteries any way you wish. Did that with a boat. I had a total of five group 31 gel cell batteries arranged in three banks that were switchable. Two banks of two batteries in parallel and a single, all switchable for a single or combo that I pleased. That was *exactly* what I was thinking.
